Kashmir isn’t a one-season destination — it’s four different trips depending on when you go, and knowing the difference will shape your entire itinerary.
Spring (March–May): Blossoms and Mild Days
This is when Kashmir’s famous almond and apple orchards bloom and the Tulip Garden in Srinagar — one of Asia’s largest — is in full color. Days are pleasantly cool, nights still need a light jacket. Ideal for travellers who want greenery without peak-season crowds.
Summer (June–August): The Classic Houseboat Season
Peak season for a reason. Dal Lake houseboats, Gulmarg’s gondola rides, and Pahalgam’s river valleys are all at their most accessible. Book accommodation at least 4–6 weeks ahead, since this is when most domestic travel to Kashmir happens.
Autumn (September–November): Chinar Season
If you’ve seen Kashmir photos with fiery red-gold trees, that’s chinar season. Fewer tourists, crisp air, and some of the best photography light of the year. Srinagar’s Mughal gardens are particularly stunning in October.
Winter (December–February): Snow and Skiing
Gulmarg transforms into a genuine ski destination, and Srinagar gets occasional snowfall that makes the houseboats and shikaras look like postcards. Not for everyone — roads can close briefly after heavy snow — but unmatched for anyone chasing snow in India without leaving the country.
What to Pack, Season by Season
- Spring/Autumn: Layers — a fleece or light jacket, closed shoes, a light scarf for the evenings.
- Summer: Still pack a light jacket for evenings on the lake; days are mild, not hot.
- Winter: Heavy thermals, a proper insulated jacket, waterproof boots, and gloves — Gulmarg and Pahalgam get genuinely cold.
Our Take
If this is your first trip, aim for late March–April or September–October — you get good weather, manageable crowds, and the most flexible pricing. Whatever the season, Kashmir rewards travellers who build in at least one unhurried day on the water, not just sightseeing point to point.
