The Maldives has a reputation for being the honeymoon destination you save up for over years. That reputation is partly outdated — here’s what actually drives the price, and where the real savings are.
What Actually Costs Money
It’s not the destination — it’s the resort category and the transfer. A seaplane transfer alone can cost more than an entire night’s stay at some properties. Choosing a resort reachable by speedboat (rather than seaplane) often cuts total trip cost significantly without compromising on the overwater-villa experience.
Local Islands vs. Resort Islands
Since 2009, the Maldives has allowed guesthouses on local islands, not just private resort islands. A hybrid trip — a few nights on a local island guesthouse, a few nights in an overwater villa — gives you the postcard experience plus a more authentic, far cheaper base for the rest of the trip.
Timing Matters More Than People Think
Shoulder season (May–July, a quieter stretch before the big European summer holidays) brings noticeably lower resort rates for nearly identical weather. Avoid only the trip-threatening late-monsoon stretch if you’re travel-sensitive to rain.
What’s Actually Worth Paying For
- An overwater villa for at least 2 nights — this is the non-negotiable “Maldives” experience.
- A sunset cruise or dolphin-watching excursion — genuinely memorable and not expensive relative to resort pricing.
- Skip the resort’s in-house excursions if a local-island tour operator runs the same trip for less — ask us, we usually know which ones overlap.
Our Take for First-Timers
Most couples over-index on resort star-rating and under-index on villa type and transfer method — a 4.5-star resort with a direct speedboat transfer and a genuine overwater villa usually beats a 5-star resort with a costly seaplane connection, for a lower total spend.
