Kerala Backwaters: The Complete Houseboat Trip Guide

Kerala Backwaters: The Complete Houseboat Trip Guide

A houseboat (locally, a “kettuvallam”) is the single most-requested experience in any Kerala itinerary — and also the most-often booked incorrectly. Here’s what to get right.

Alleppey vs. Kumarakom

Alleppey gives you narrower, more village-lined canals — closer to how backwater life actually looks, with paddy fields and small communities visible from the deck. Kumarakom, on Vembanad Lake, is more open water with a quieter, more resort-like feel. Neither is wrong; Alleppey suits travellers who want to feel “in” the backwaters, Kumarakom suits those who want a calmer, wide-lake stay.

One Night Is Usually Enough

A single overnight houseboat stay — boarding around noon, cruising through the afternoon, anchoring for the night, and disembarking the next morning — covers the full experience. Multi-night stays are available but mostly suit travellers who specifically want extended slow-travel time rather than more “sights.”

What’s Included (Usually)

Most houseboats run full-board: breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner, almost always included in the stay and cooked onboard by the crew. Ask specifically about this when booking rather than assuming — it varies by operator.

Best Time to Go

November through February gives the most comfortable weather for a houseboat — cooler temperatures and minimal rain. June through September is monsoon season; dramatic scenery, but cruising can be curtailed by weather.

Pairing It With the Rest of Kerala

A houseboat night sits well in the middle of a trip — pair it with 2–3 days in Munnar’s tea gardens beforehand and a couple of beach days in Kovalam or Varkala after, so the trip has a hills-water-beach arc rather than being backwaters-only.

Booking Tip

Private houseboats (just your group) cost more than shared ones but are almost always worth it for couples or families — shared houseboats can mean compromising on itinerary timing with strangers.
